Mangasia: Wonderlands of Asiana Comics
The largest selection of original Asian cartoons
Showing the largest selection of original Asian cartoons exhibited alongside their commercial counterparts, printed for the mass market.
Much of them have never been shown out of their home country. The exhibition will also focus on the creative process that leads to the realization of stories, starting with scripts and passing through sketches and layouts, up to full pages.
Curated by Paul Gravett and a team of over twenty experts, the exhibition will explore the entire realm of this new Asian cartoon continent through works from Japan, North Korea, South Korea, India, China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines and Singapore as well as emerging scenes such as Buthan, Cambodia, East Timor, Mongolia and Vietnam. Thematic routes will compare the variety of folklore, history and experimentation across the region. The exhibition will give space to the forerunners of comic books related to the Asian tradition of “narrative” visual arts and their impact beyond the boundaries of printed paper to live in the form of animated and live-action products for cinema and television, music, video games, Fashion and contemporary art.
